1.  Effective Communication

  • Listens, consults others and communicates  proactively.
  • Speaks clearly and articulates issues, concerns and ideas.
  • Reflects back information received.
  • Perceives behavioural nuances and responds.
  • Generates and maintains rapport with people at all levels.
  • Uses and maintains positive body language.
  • Writes clearly and succinctly, avoiding the use of unnecessary jargon or complicated language.
  • Provides professionally presented and correctly written materials where appropriate.
  • Structures information to meet the needs of clients and the intended audience.
  • Uses non-discriminatory language.

2. Professional Presentation

  • Dresses smartly and professionally, reflective of and appropriate to the occasion.
  • Uses professionally prepared materials such as business cards, handouts, ceremonies or papers used for CANZ business.

3. Planning and Organisation

  • Manages time effectively.
  • Identifies and organises resources needed to accomplish tasks.
  • Plans activities and projects well in advance and takes account of possible changing circumstances.
  • Arrives punctually for ceremonies and meetings. If delayed, ensures clients are advised.
  • Monitors and maintains quality.
  • Responds to requests in a timely manner.

4.  Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrates commitment to Ongoing Professional Development (OPC) by enhancing their celebrancy knowledge, skills and abilities. OPD is part of best practice for every celebrant.  Note: Celebrants applying for CANZ Accreditation will need to provide documentary evidence of their Ongoing Professional Development to support their application.
  • Develops and openly communicates self-insight such as an awareness of own strengths and weaknesses and reflects and evaluates own performance.
  • Has knowledge of legal procedures required for ceremonies that require legal or community permissions.
  • Is familiar with the Marriage Act (if Registered Marriage Celebrant)

5. Confidence

  • Makes presentations and undertakes public speaking with skill and confidence.
  • Is audible in all environments and confident in the use of microphones and audiovisual materials as necessary.
  • Takes initiative where appropriate, acts with confidence and works under own direction.
  • Provides alternative options for consideration where appropriate or necessary.
  • Maintains a positive outlook. Projects credibility.

6. Spiritual & Cultural Understanding

  • Shows respect and sensitivity towards cultural, philosophical, spiritual and religious differences/practices/rituals.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of relevant and different cultural practices and is prepared to learn about them, as needed.
  • Promotes equal opportunities.

7. Ethics

  • Is honest, diligent and demonstrates integrity.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to CANZ, its Code of Ethics and its Constitution.
  • Has no criminal record. Is sober and free from illegal drugs.
  • Maintains client confidentiality and has awareness of Privacy Act.

8. Working With People

  • Demonstrates an interest in and understanding of others (friendly without being familiar).
  • Shows flexibility, adaptability and responsiveness and recognises and values the contribution of others.
  • Takes responsibility for actions, projects and people.
  • Handles ambiguity, making positive use of the opportunities it presents.
