I am primarily a marriage celebrant and I love this work; I touch people’s lives at a happy time. It would be a privilege to be part of your wedding, to help you plan a ceremony that truly works for you.
I was reminded of the satisfaction of this recently, driving home from a small, informal wedding that had so many lovely elements. It was held in the bride’s parents’ rural garden on a splendid autumn day, there was a blessing from both families as part of the ceremony, the groom’s god-father played the saxophone and sang during the signing, and a good friend of the couple made a surprise visit from overseas and delivered a stunning reading. The couple had been wonderful to work with. It seemed a perfect result.
I became a civil celebrant in the mid-1990s. It is always my practice to listen to what couples want, to hear their vision for their wedding, offer ideas and resources, and write original ceremonies. I draw on my long career as a journalist and story-teller during interviews with couples, and in crafting the words. I send a draft copy well ahead of the ceremony. My wish is to deliver exactly what people want, be it a detailed ceremony with many vibrant parts or a brief but important honouring of the legalities.
I have co-written a book with fellow celebrant Kerril Cooper entitled The Big Day, A Guide to Getting Married in New Zealand, published by New Holland. The research for this further enlightened and informed my work.
I also conduct funerals and work closely with the families involved, sharing resources and ideas, and similarly using my interviewing and writing skills to compile unique and meaningful services. There is also much satisfaction in being able to support bereaved people at such a significant and challenging time, and help them honour their loved one in most fitting way.
I largely conduct ceremonies in the Waikato but occasionally travel to the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. And no ceremony is too big, or too small. It’s your event and you should have exactly what you want!
